  3. Welcome to the “Promised Land” and “Big Log” CD ROMs.  There are a few
  4. points addressed in the manual we would like to reiterate before you
  5. install and play:
  6.  
  7. RAM
  8. Both discs require an absolute minimum of 5.5MB available RAM, above and
  9. beyond that required by your system software.  This means they will play
  10. on an 8MB machine if your system overhead is less than 2.5 MB. Too many
  11. fonts, extensions, and other utilities will deny play.  To compensate,
  12. eliminate as many of these options as you can until you are beneath the
  13. 2.5MB level, or ideally, get more RAM.  This later action will improve your
  14. experience with “Promised Land” and all other software.
  15.  
  16. QUICKTIME
  17. We have included a copy of QuickTime 2.1 (For Macintosh) and QuickTime
  18. 2.02 (For Windows) on our disc.  If you do not have QuickTime on your
  19. machine, or if you have version that is older than those mentioned above,
  20. you will need to install the enclosed version of QuickTime to play our
  21. games.  Please read the manual for instructions.  If you do have the same
  22. version or a newer version of QuickTime, you should not have to install the
  23. versions on our disc. After installing Quicktime for Windows on a Windows
  24. 95 machine, be sure to add the file
  25. “MSVHDW95.QTC” to the folder where the Quicktime components are
  26. stored, normally your “Windows\System” folder. Failure to do so could
  27. result in reduced performance.
  28.  
  29. 16 BIT COLOR “Our software was designed to play in 16-bit graphics mode. 
  30. While it may play in 8-bit,  256 colors mode IT WILL LOOK FUZZY. If you
  31. currently have an 8-bit (256 colors) system, you should definitely upgrade
  32. to 16-bit (“Thousands of Colors”) or 32-bit (aka 24-bit, “Millions of
  33. Colors”)
  34.  
  35. The video and animation in our game were designed to play across a very
  36. wide spectrum of machines and platforms.  On the Windows side, our
  37. absolute minimum configuration is a 486/33 with a double-speed drive. 
  38. On the Macintosh side, our absolute minimum configuration is a 68030
  39. series Macintosh with a double-speed drive.  Playback of video and
  40. animation on these machines may be slow or slightly out-of-synch.  The
  41. more powerful the machine, and the faster the CD ROM drive, the better
  42. the performance you will likely realize.

  44. FULL-SCREEN VIDEO
  45. We have enabled some of our videos and animation's to play full-screen. To
  46. do so, go to the “Inventory” utility (the “X” in the upper left-hand screen),
  47. click on the “Key” icon, click on the monitor icon until you have a full-
  48. screen, click on the green check, then click on the “Return” arrow icon.  If
  49. you wish to make the opening animation full-screen, go through this
  50. process immediately upon completion of the opening credits (when the “X”
  51. first appears). Please note that the “Big Log” disc does not have this
  52. function. Please note, however, that bringing these movies to full-screen
  53. will cut both their speed and resolution in half.  You may return to half-
  54. screen mode by again clicking on the monitor until the half-screen state
  55. is shown and then clicking on the check mark.
  56.  
  57. SECRET MUSIC VIDEOS
  58. EMI Records has included three music videos on the “Big Log” disc: “I Am
  59. I,” “Disconnected,” and “Bridge.” You will find them hidden among the
  60. other 23 videos embedded throughout “Big Log.”  
  61.  
  62. SAVE GAME
  63. When using the “Save Game” function (by selecting the “Key” icon from
  64. the “Inventory” screen), please take very careful notice of the letters you
  65. enter.  It is easy to mistake the letter “l” (L) for the number “1” (one),
  66. and the letter “O” for the number “0” (zero).  See Manual for further
  67. instructions.
  68.  
  69. MAP NAVIGATION
  70. We have included a system of rapid navigation.  When you click upon the
  71. “X” in the upper left-hand screen, you jump to the inventory screen.  There
  72. you will find on the right images of each of the five Artist Worlds plus the
  73. Forest. Clicking upon the image of the forest in the lower right will
  74. “jump” you to this location.  Clicking upon any of the five images of the
  75. Artist Worlds will reveal four locations within each of these worlds. 
  76. They are initially black and white, meaning they are unavailable to you. 
  77. As you explore each of these worlds, the images on the Inventory screen
  78. will turn to color, meaning they are now available to you as shortcuts.  
  79. As they turn to color, click on these images to “jump” to these locations.
